In 2020, Dijon released his solo debut EP How Do You Feel About Getting Married?, a dreamy atmospheric mix of soul and R&B. He dropped "Many Times" and "Rodeo Clown" as singles in the weeks leading up to his debut record Absolutely, giving a glimpse into the wistful nostalgia of past heartbreak captured by the album.
It feels wrong to say that Dijon merely explores themes of nostalgia and love, when pieces like "The Dress" and "Rodeo Clown" encompass lyricism with such raw emotion as if the words have been marinating in sentiment and are aching to be felt.
"I still wear the T-shirt that you gave me, So what are
you so ashamed of? Rodeo could kill ya,
I just wanna kiss ya, But you won't let me near ya"
The intrinsically genre-less nature of this record puts you directly into the intense world of Dijon, his storytelling like a patchwork of memories mended together by specific moments of heartbreak.
You can clearly feel and hear the raw energy behind each recording, whether it be small background noises or voice cracks, as the live-esque quality of each song builds to the album’s tenderness.
This new dimension of R&B makes "Absolutely" worth the wait. Listen here.
